Rain lashed against the windscreen, blurring the already dismal view. Thomas squinted, his headlights barely cutting through the thick curtain of water. He'd been driving for hours, a gnawing unease twisting in his gut. His GPS had died miles ago, and the last town was a faded memory. It was then that he saw it—a break in the trees, revealing a slender ribbon of asphalt snaking off the main road. Curiosity, tinged with desperation, took hold. He veered off, the tires sucking on the muddy track.

The road twisted through the dense forest, and the darkness was broken only by the erratic flashes of lightning. Finally, the trees thinned, revealing a sight that stopped his heart. There, nestled in a shallow valley, stood a building unlike any he'd ever seen. It was a grand, two-story structure of red brick, its weathered face etched with the stories of a forgotten era. But what truly sent shivers down his spine was the light emanating from its high windows. It wasn't the soft yellow of a lamp, but a deep, pulsating red that seemed to bleed into the storm clouds above.
